One of the most noticeable things about my 1980's New York City was the number of people that didn't "exist". They'd dropped below the poverty line and even though they were clearly visible in the street as a person, there were "unseen" by passers-by. In this picture, the guy "asleep" on the sidewalk is unseen by any passers-by. Most of the time the "unseen" just stood there and begged, then one day simply vanished.
